Summary: Over the course of the entire week my sleep habits have been very on and off in terms of consistency. I try to make it my goal to get around 7-8 hours of sleep and going to bed at a decent time but I do not always deliver on that. On the week days I’ve been getting decent sleep but I do not go to sleep at a good time. Monday and Wednesdays I have class at 9 so I wake up early to make sure I get on campus early. Usually fall asleep around 12-1 am and only get the bare minimum of sleep. Tuesdays and Thursdays I don’t have class till 10:30 so I give myself more sleep or I stay up longer the night before knowing that I don’t need to use my brain until later on in the day and can be really lazy and slow. On the weekends, at least this weekend I got about the amount of needed sleep that’s recommended but I try to get up early so I can enjoy my weekends and then stay up super late and call that my downtime. My body and mind is rather unusual, when I get less sleep I can somewhat function better and be more alert and awake. But when I get more sleep I think my mind and body is so relaxed from me not sleeping well I just feel more tired which is like polar opposites of each other and its really strange. I think on average on the weekdays not including Friday since I do not have class that day and I just wake up whenever and chill. On average I’d say around 28 hours I get on the week days. On the weekends depending on what goes on in the morning or if I can sleep in I get around 14-18 hours of sleep on the weekends. To me I don’t see sleep as a need for me, I really prioritize work, school, homework, and social time with my family and friends and girlfriend. I feel like I can live a full and fulfilling life if I can stay awake as long as possible and really just do a lot of activities and enjoy day and nights as much as I can with every amount of energy I have in me. I have school work and it can get overwhelming sometimes, only into the 3rd week of school but some of my classes already have 2-3 assignments per week with many steps and time. I try to do them as soon as possible to free up my schedule so I can have more time for other people or to just relax by myself. I also like to spend time with family and loved ones and just be present or available for them to enjoy the days together. For me personally what gets me “sleep” is me just sitting in my room or having own space and playing games, making food, watching tv, and to me being able to take care of myself in that manor is my way of sleeping and resting. I feel recharged and even with the minimal amount of sleep I can get I feel well enough to do what the next day asks of me. Overall I think what really gets in the way of me sleeping is me. I will make every excuse I can not to sleep or I will procrastinate my work so much and avoid it and then make the excuse of needing to get it done before the next day and stay up very late in order to getting it done causing me to get little to no sleep.
Changes to better sleep schedule and habits : I should have a better system for sleeping and making sure my mind and body gets enough rest. I can definitely feel the fatigue and sleep deprivation kick in at times and as I read it can be very dangerous and can cause myself harm or others such as driving. It’s the number one reason why people get into car accidents on the road or at night. I try to set schedules but I usually stop committing to them after a minute, I may try setting alarms for it to the point where it bothers me to sleep. I also recommend taking showers every night, I do and it always makes me feel relaxed and when I lay down after it makes me very tired and fatigued and honestly helps me sleep better. Making sure that the room is how I like it, I usually have a fan on medium to low speed and helps me sleep but I also cover myself and my head it’s interesting but helps me sleep and anyway that one can set up their sleeping space will always make it better and more comfortable to sleep properly. Not using your phone or watching tv is controversial to me, I use my phone and it makes me more tired where people can say it’ll keep you awake but I think its personal preference or just how your body and minds reacts to it.
