I think overall I had to many classes and I could’ve done more online rather than have them all in person. Trying to balance work and then my personal life outside of school was just to much and I definitely could’ve avoided the levels of stress and conflict I had this semester. This definitely was what I expected, everyone told me that college is difficult and having to balance your personal life and whatever other side hobbies you have, it’s a lot. Definitely what I expected but just didn’t know how to prepare.
I think the biggest thing that surprised me about college is that I don’t have to attend class. Like for some attendance was graded and I needed to show up for assignments that could only be done in class but other than that after a second, I would do my lectures all in a couple days and then just chill and go to work during my class times and then every once in a while pop in and listen to the lectures and such just to still be in the environment.
I did not make friends. I am an introvert and the only time I talked to people were in classes and more than half the time it would only be when I HAVE to. But I’d never avoid people, I’m always down to chat but just can’t really start a conversation.
There wasn’t really a lot of study tips, I mean there was but I didn’t listen to them I kinda had my own way of studying. I would just get into a space or the library and put on my headphones and listen to a playlist that was like long so I didn’t have to change it every 20 minutes or so. I would also just watch shows because surprisingly I am able to not focus on it and get distracted. This also ties into the services I used which would be the library, the student store and the halls for information and counseling services.
The INDS program has given me the tools and resources to refer to when needed. A lot of people think that they know everything and they have all the answers but there’s nothing wrong with going over “basics”. The program has definitely helped me in this first semester of college. I think what didn’t work is when having to do games or like classroom activities. I am not social but I also would have wanted to do like campus tours, or a lecture, or something more related to our career.
The other classes I took this semester were an English class, Statistics class, Communications, government , and this class. The thing I would do differently is not have so many classes and let alone not have them all in person. There are definitely some where I could have been online and not have to come in so much and have a more balanced life. I am succeeding in 3/5 classes and the other 2 I am trying to catch up and do my best for this last week. Most of my finals are next week or due this weekend so I am doing a lot of work and prep for them.
Yes you can share this with future students!
